This file will help you to start working with your new WordPress Theme. First steps installing, guides to create your own pages, portfolio views or any other feature included.

1. First Steps

The first point that we must talk about is 'how to install' any WordPress Theme.

1.1 Installing the theme

Basically there are two methods to install any WordPress theme. The first one is using the WordPress Theme installer and the second one is installing it using FTP. Let´s see the first one.


1.1.1. WordPress Theme Installer

  • Runing the installer

    Installing the theme using the WordPress Theme Installer is really easy.

  • Log into your WordPress Dashboard → Appearance → Themes
  • Here notice the tab at the top side → Install Themes

    You must click on "Upload".

  • Now you must choose the zip file you will find within the whole package that you downloaded from Themforest.

    01 - Theme folder → "calafate.zip" file.

  • The last step is clicking "Activate" once all the files are correctly uploaded.





1.1.2. Via FTP (alternative and advanced method)

  • Using your FTP client

    For example Filezilla, log into your server via FTP and search for your themes folder within → wp-content/themes

  • Here you must place the main folder that you will find within the whole package you downloaded from Themforest.

    This folder´s name is "calafate" (the unzipped version).

  • Once your files are placed (completely uploaded to your server).

    Log into the WordPress Dashboard and go to → Appearance → Themes and there you will see the screenshot for Calafate Theme, just click on "Activate". Voilà! You are ready to start with your new portfolio!

1.1.3. Required Plugin Installation

In order to take more advantage the theme asks for installing some plugins, we recommend to install all of them. So you can create every element and parts of the theme.

In this sense, once you will activate the theme you will notice a yellow square in the top part where the plugin assistant asks you for installing the included plugins.

    This is the plugin which activates the portfolio custom post type. It doesn’t require any setup, just installation and activation, for the theme to have portfolios.

    This is the plugin which will give you the two basic shortcodes, one for the twitter slider and one for the content slider.

    A really useful plugin which gives you all the tools that you need in order to make your site search engine friendly.

    If your hosting company doesn't already offer some kind of caching for your WordPress installation, you should install this plugin with a minimal configuration to make sure that you'll benefit from a fast website.

  • Forms
    Contact Form 7

    Powerful and really useful plugin for creating all kinds of forms on your site. Required if you want a contact page with a form on it.


  • TRANSLATION
    Loco Translate

    Dead simple plugin to use for translating the site easily in your own language.

  • UPDATES
    Envato Market

    Created by Envato, this plugin allows you to connect your marketplace account with your website in order to get updates for your themes & plugins.

  • E-COMMERCE
    WooCommerce

    The well known dedicated plugin for high quality WordPress e-commerce websites. Totally supported by Calafate.

  • SOCIAL
    Twitter

    Install oAuth Twitter Feed for Developers in order to display your tweets in your site.

  • SOCIAL
    Instagram

    In case that you want to show your Instragram shots, as we do in the sidebar within the blog, install 'WP Instagram Widget' for better handle this.


Another plugin which will not popup here is WooCommerce. This plugin is only useful if you want to have a shop on your website, otherwise you can skip it. So if you do need it, please download it from here.

Note that this is a third party plugin so no support will be given for it. The same goes for any other plugins that you may install with this theme (except the two Calafate plugins).


1.2. Theme Customizer

After activating the theme, you will notice that a new submenu item appeared under 'Appearance' with the tag 'Customize'. If you click on it you will be taken to the WordPress customizer, a tool which will allow you to modify the look and feel of your website.



Site identity

Here is the place where you want to give a title and a tagline for your website. The title and tagline are normally used only in the top bar of the browser, however, if you choose to display a regular text logo, the title you set here will be used. You can also upload a site icon.

Logo

Enable or disable the image logo and upload an image. You need to choose a height for the image that you upload and make sure that your image is at least double in size than the height you give it (in order to display sharp on all devices).

If you will use WooCommerce, make sure that you also add a logo for all the related pages.

Header

Enable / disable various functions related to the theme's header, such as sticky behavior or general appearance.

Color scheme

Here you have all the color options available in the theme. Some are general options, while some can be overwritten inside individual pages (like background, text and accent colors), but this is the place where you start with your colors.

Menus

Choose the theme's main menu as you usual do in any other WordPress theme. Just add your pages in the area dedicated and save your changes in order to setup your main menu.

Typography

You have a selection of Google Fonts to choose from for all the elements on your website.

The theme's default configuration is this:

  • Menus / Logo: Helvetica Neue
  • Main Headings: Poppins
  • Other Headings: Work Sans
  • Body: Work Sans
  • Captions: Crimson Text

Portfolio

Here, you need to choose your default portfolio page. This step is really important for certain features like project navigation and related section.

General

Enable / disable various functions within the theme as the AJAX functionality, social share options or page actions.

Blog

The blog is a pretty complex page with lots of different settings.

  • Widgetised sidebar: Once enabled, a sidebar will show up on all blog / post / archive pages, containing the blog widgets.
  • Blog style: It refers to the blog list layout.
  • Creative grid columns: Only for the grid style, you can choose between two column styles.
  • Creative grid carousel posts: Again, only the grid style offers you the possibility to have a large posts carousel at the top of the first page (if there are multiple post pages). Here you can choose the posts to be included in that carousel.
  • Single post style: There are two available styles for single post pages.

Shop

Just like the blog, the shop page also has quite a few options to choose from.

  • Masonry grid type: This changes the style of the shop grid. It functions just like the portfolio grid, so for more details, please view that section.
  • Thumbnail's style: There are two styles for thumbnails, the first one being suitable for products with short titles, while the other one being suitable for anything.
  • Regular grid aspect ratio: If you go with a regular grid, you can select an aspect ratio against all of your product images will be cropped.
  • Number of columns: Available for any grid style.
  • Columns gap: Pretty straightforward.

Widgets

Here you can set the footer / blog sidebar widgets. Please note that the sidebar widget area doesn't appear unless you're editing from the blog page and the sidebar is enabled.

Static Front Page

Here you can choose the homepage for your website. It can either be the blog page, with a list of your latest posts, or it can be any page that you desire (like a portfolio page for example). The second setting is your posts page (the blog page).

1.3. Setting up the menu

After playing with the theme's settings and choosing your front page / blog page, you should to create your page's main menu.

Go to Appearance → Menus and you will see a panel where you can create new menus. Create one, add your created pages to it (from the left side panels) and save it. After this, in the left side you have a drop down box where you can select the Primary Navigation. Choose your newly created menu, hit “Save” and you’re all set. Easy, right?


Note that you can use up to two levels of navigation in this theme.





1.4. Using the import file

There is an xml import file in the download (calafate-import.xml), which can be used to achieve a near example of the online demo. Please note that the images which you see online will not be available when you do the import, since they’re copyrighted.

This is a great starting point for your website, as you’ll be able to delete everything at any time and only keep what you need, that start from there!


Please note that this import is not perfect and it might fail sometimes, but it’s a good solution if you can’t or don’t know where to get started.

Also, please wait around 5-15min for the importer to be finished!

If some media files fail to import / upload, don’t worry about it. It’s nothing and it happens from time to time. The included images are blurred anyway so you don’t have any use of them. The import is just to get you started.

To use it, go to Tools → Import → WordPress and upload the xml file, choose to import everything, hit the button and wait.


Note that if you want to import the shop products as well, you need to have WooCommerce installed and activated before doing the import.

1.5 Staying up to date

It is crucially important that you always stay up to date with all of your themes, plugins & WordPress installation. For this purpose, Envato created a plugin called Envato Market, which we've bundled in v1.0.1 of our theme, or you can get from here.


The plugin is pretty straightforward to use.. Once you install & activate it, you will get a new menu item with the same name. Inside it, you have instructions on how to connect your marketplace account (which is a breeze - just click the big button and if you're logged into your Envato account, everything is done automatically). Once you are connected you get access to all of your past and future marketplace purchases.

As soon as we release a theme update you will be notified in your WordPress dashboard.



2. Adding Content with the Page Builder

This theme has three types of content available: regular pages (which can be of different types), blog posts and a custom portfolio post type.

Before diving into content creation and all available options, we need to discuss about the theme's column manager. This is a really simple application which allows you to easily create columns in any page that you wish. It's really lightweight and it doesn't bloat the content page with unuseful markup. It doesn't use shortcodes or meta for the output, it simply works with pure HTML, directly in your page content, thus being really SEO friendly and easy to manipulate.

In order to start creating content in this way, you need to click the "Show Columns Manager" button at the top left corner when editing a page.



After doing this, you'll see a pretty intuitive dashboard, where you just click "Add column" and you're taken to a popup from where you can add content the regular WordPress way that you're used to. You have the TinyMCE editor, with all it's bells and whistles there.



At the top you can choose column width and option top / bottom padding. You can also center a column from here. You also have options for several screen sizes if you want to further tweak the responsive design of your columns. Normally you don't have to change this, but you do have the option to either select a specific column size for each screen or even hide the column completely.



When you are done putting your content, you just have to hit the "Save" button, and the new column will appear in your page. You have further options of resizing columns from the app, moving them around, editing, cloning or deleting.

It's that easy! If you've worked with complex page builders before you'll just love how easy and simple this is, and you'll be able to focus on your own content. If you've never used builders before, you'll find this incredibly easy to learn.

There is one last field that we didn't touch here - it's the custom class, present in the top bar of any column. You can give each column one or many extra classes, in order to style them differently via CSS. We also have our own classes which can be used to further tweak the columns:

  • full-width: makes a certain column extend beyond the horizontal limits of the layout, making it totally full width. If you embed a single image inside the column, it will take up all the space and be displayed proportionally.
  • parallax-bg: adds all prerequisites for a "parallax background" image, either for a regular or (prefered) for a full width column. It works in conjunction with a separate class to define the background (see below).
  • no-right-margin: pretty straightforwards, it removes the right margin of the column.
  • no-bottom-margin: same as above, only for bottom.


2.1. Adding Posts

These are the default steps that you need to do in order to add a blog post:



  • Go to Posts → Add New
  • Enter a title.
  • Select a post category.
  • Add some relevant tags.
  • Choose a featured image.
  • Insert all of your remaining content in the content area. You can use the columns manager for this purpose or simply use the normal WordPress text editor. But the page builder will help you to achieve more interesting layouts!
  • Write a few words excerpt (it is good for search results and SEO to have an excerpt, no matter what kind of content do you have in your post).
  • Click "Publish" and you're all done.





You can change in a very easy way the blog layout via the Customizer. With some few clicks you can change completely the blog design going from the minimal layout to the magazine. Also, you´ll see in this video how easy is customizing the color schemes in general.





2.2 Adding Pages

The process of adding pages is quite similar to adding posts:

  • Go to Pages → Add New
  • Enter a title.
  • Select a page template or leave the default one
  • Setup the page style (optional - info below).
  • Setup the hero header (optional - info below).
  • Insert all of your remaining content in the content area. You can use the columns manager for this purpose.
  • Write a few words excerpt (it is good for search results and SEO to have an excerpt, no matter what kind of content do you have in your post).
  • Hit "Publish" and you're all done.



Page Style

Each page can have a unique style. The general color scheme will be applied everywhere in the website, but if you want a certain page to have a red background with yellow text, this is the area to edit. You can even add a custom image logo for each page.



Hero Header

The hero header is used in conjunction with the page style, because it is a static header which fades out, being replaced by the page's content and background color, allowing you to creative amazing layouts!

You can have one or more images for the header, a video, and also put a custom tagline over everything.



Page Templates

As you might already noticed, there are a few Page Templates available for you to use. Each template will configure your page to look and act in a different way.



  • Default Template — This is the default template and it outputs exactly the content of the page, without any modifications.
  • Portfolio — This is a highly configurable page which outputs all the portfolio projects that you have on your site.
  • Contact — This template creates a contact map, based on Google Maps API, which can be triggered and shown inside your page.

Shortcodes

The theme has a few shortcodes embedded in the shortcodes plugin, which give you additional tools in adding content to your website.

These need to be written manually, since they are only a few and with basic options. To add a shortcode, simply write it like a regular paragraph inside the text editor (wheter this is done with the theme's Page Builder or within regular content).


Twitter slider
[calafate_twitter_slider username="envato" no="3"]

This is the twitter slider, which allows you to share a number of your latest tweets inside a text carouel. Just put your username and the no (number) of tweets that you wish to be displayed.

This is the content slider. It allows you to create a basic text carousel, with unlimited slides..


Latest projects
[calafate_portfolio page_id="234" no="5" cat="art-direction"]

This is an easy shortcode which allows you to put portfolio items anywhere you wish. It's really simple, having only three properties:

  • page_id - this is the most important! It refers to the original portfolio page, which contains all the style settings (thumbnails, grid, captions, colors, etc. - all portfolio properties are taken from this page).
  • no - an optional parameter, it specifies how many items from the portfolio you want include.
  • cat - another optional parameter, it allows you to define custom categories to be used instead of all categories from a given portfolio.

Latest posts
[calafate_blog style="minimal" posts_per_page="6"]

This is another easy shortcode which allows you to put blog posts items anywhere you wish. There are three style options:

  • style - it can either be "minimal" or "grid", and it just clones the two already available blog page styles.
  • posts_per_page - defines the number of posts that will appear (pagination is disabled obviously).
  • el_class - (optional) custom class for further styling.

Then, you have 6 options which allow you to create a really complex query:

  • category - write one or more category slugs, separated by commas (ex: "category1,category2")
  • tag - same as above, but with tags (ex: "tag1,tag2")
  • author - same as above, but with authors (ex: "author1,author2")
  • include - if you want to include individual posts, you can use this to specify custom post id's (ex: "100,200")
  • orderby - ordering method, it defaults to "date". Other options are "author", "title", "name" (post slug), "rand" (random order).
  • order - ordering type, can be "ASC" (ascending) or "DESC" (descending)

All these query parameters are optional, case in which you'll have a shortcode showing your latest posts.


WordPress galleries

A bit more complex shortcode, this is the gallery shortcode. Initially, it can be created using the Add Media button, and then Create Gallery. Select your desired images, add captions, order them as you wish, choose a certain columns number, then insert the gallery into the page.

After the gallery is inserted, you can edit it in a few ways. For this, turn on the Text tab, so you can see the text shortcode. You will probably see something like this:

There are some parameters which you can add in order to change the gallerie's appearance (just like in the above example):

  • size - it refers to the size of the thumbnail, not the size of the lightbox item. It should be manually set to "large" or "full", depending on your image's size and the number of columns that you want.
  • link - it can either be "file" (in this case the ligthbox opens the bigger version of the uploaded image) or "none" (in this case the gallery is plain, without any actions available).
  • css_class - you can add custom classes to the gallery object in order to further style it via css. There are also two classes available, which already have styles applied. One is "hover-opacity", which adds a simple hover effect on the thumbnails, and the other one is "grid-border", which adds a tiny 1px border between the thumbnails (fancy with transparent images). One last class "arrows" is for sliders, in case you want to replace the navigation dots with arrows.
  • type - if present and set to "slider", it turns the grid gallery into an image carousel.

Here's an example of a slider gallery with arrows instead of pagination dots:

Lightboxes

Related to the gallery, there is also one other feature available, which needs to be explained here. It's the ligthbox.. By default, any image wrapped in a link can become a lightbox.. However, you can also use lightboxes in other ways - for example, you can add video iframes as links to images. Just add a link to an image, and make it point to a custom URL, which should be the iframe src. At the end, give the link the classes: fancybox fancybox-iframe.




Forms

Calafate doesn't have any dedicated form builder, because it offers you styling to use your own form plugins. We recommend Contact Form 7, as it's free & easy to use.


There are a few elements which you can use in order to style the form.. Below you have an example on how we built the contact form in our demo:

As you can see, we've wrapped all the fields inside a div with some classes, then each field has it's very own container, again, with a class specifying that it's a grid item, and one class specifying the actual width.


Using this example, you can create form as complex as you desire. Here's another:

The last example is about MailChimp integration. For this purpose, you need an extra plugin, called Contact Form 7 MailChimp Extension.


After installing this plugin you will see a new tab when creating forms.. In that tab you need to insert MailChimp details, such as your API key & subscription list id. Here's an example MailChimp form:

2.3 Adding Projects

The process of adding projects is quite similar to adding posts:

  • Go to Portfolio → Add New
  • Enter a title
  • Select a post category.
  • Choose a featured image. If you don´t add any, this could break the grid.
  • Setup the hero header for the current post (optional, of course).
  • Insert all of your remaining content in the content area. You can use the columns manager for this purpose.
  • Write a few words excerpt (it is good for search results and SEO to have an excerpt, no matter what kind of content do you have in your post).
  • Click "Publish" and you're all done.

2.3.1 Setting up portfolio page

As you'll see in the actual portfolio page, there are lots of options to display the portfolio. You can have a fixed masonry grid, a flexible one, or even thumbnails resized all the same, based on a certain aspect ratio.

The fixed masonry and regular grids are pretty easy to understand. In this case, just upload really large images (even 1920px wide images are good) and let the theme do all the hard resizing. You will also be able to easily play with the available options.

The flexible grid is the most interesting one, and it works just like a regular masonry grid, the only difference being that you can "break it" with thumbnails that are larger than the regular columns number.

First of all, you need to choose the number of columns you want to work with. The highest the number, the greater the effects that you can achieve. So let's start with 6 for example. If you view your portfolio page, you'll see a basic 6 columns grid.

Now, for the fun part, choose a project, and edit it. Inside, you'll see field called Unique Project Settings. There you can choose a multiplier for your column. If you choose 3 for example, this project will have the size of 3 columns instead of 6..

This is the basic idea and it's awesome to play with it. You have to remember that images keep their ratios, so for a perfect grid you'll need perfectly resized images. The easiest way is to upload perfect ratios, like 1:1, 2:1, 3:2, etc.. Below you have an example grid.



The minimum width for a thumbnail is 480px (this is for large 4K monitors), but in the example we've used 500px, for an easier understanding. Resizing your thumbnails this way will give you the sharpest grid. Please note that even the slightest mistake, like 500 x 501px, will give you bad results in the grid.


2.3.2 Unlimited portfolios

The latest notable feature is the unlimited portfolios one. This allows you to create unlimited portfolio pages, each with it's own projects, settings, navigation, categories, etc..

  1. First of all, create two separate portfolio pages, we'll call them A & B.
  2. Create four projects under two separate categories, let's say projects a & b under category 1, and c & d under category 2.
  3. Under each individual project you have the "Unique portfolio page" setting. There you can choose a parent page for each project - so simply assign projects a & b to page A, and c & d to page B.
  4. Then inside each portfolio, choose the categories which include the projects that you've assigned to that portfolio page - assign category 1 to page A and category 2 to page B.
  5. That's it! If you've done everything right, you should have two totally separate portfolio pages, each with it's own settings, color scheme, layout, projects & navigation between projects.

2.4 Covers

With this feature you can introduce your projects with a very mininal look & feel. The functionality is really similar to some other parts of the theme, for example, it follows the same paradigm that hovering categories when you open the filtering area in portfolio or shop pages.

Having this into account, we have created a very easy tool for you to introduce to your audiente into some of your most important, featured or recent projects. Here you can have a look at how this new feature looks like:





Creating a page like this one is really easy, for this, you just need to create a new page (Pages > Add New). Here you need to choose the template 'Cover'. These settings are enough in order to start adding your projects, let´s have a closer look at these details and let´s see how to add the featured projects.





Here you´ll find different options:

  • Title: By Default you´ll find 'Featured Projects', simply change this to your needs.
  • Style: You have different styles to choose from.
  • Items: Just click 'Add Row' button, add a title, an image and your page URL where the item should link to and you are ready. Easy and fast.
  • Call to action:
  • Here you´ll find two options, Label and URL. Label is the literal text will appear as your CTA and URL the link where this button will point in.




As you can see here, this tool is really easy to use but very porwerful in terms of showing your contents in a very visual way. We hope you like it!


3. Tips & Tricks

This short chapter covers some tips & tricks that you can do in order to make the site look and run better.


3.1. Child Theme

A WordPress child theme is a theme that inherits the functionality of another theme, called the parent theme. Child theme allows you to modify, or add to the functionality of that parent theme. A child theme is the safest and easiest way to modify an existing theme, whether you want to make a few tiny changes or extensive changes. Instead of modifying the theme files directly, you can create a child theme and override within.

This theme already comes with a child theme (calafate-child-theme), which you can use directly if you want to replace PHP functions from the theme or have lots of css code that you want to paste in.

3.2. Make your site faster


3.2.1. Get a good hosting

You may not think that this is important, but if you want your site to display really fast you need to get a good hosting. This is the first step in having a fast site, which also translates into more views, which also translates into a better SEO, which finally translates into more sales.

There are three hosting companies which i recommend:

  • SiteGround → This is a very good hosting company, which we are currently using to host our theme demos on. If you bought this theme you probably liked the speed as well, so we highly recommend SiteGround to host your themes on (especially the Cloud VPS option).
  • Media Temple → if you want a premium WordPress hosting which is easy to manage and works pretty well, this is a good choice to host your website on.
  • WPEngine → definitely not as cheap as the two examples above, but if you really want an incredibly fast website and absolutely no headaches in managing it, WPEngine is the way to go. With it you don’t have to worry about security, caching, updates, etc. Everything is handled by a great theme of professionals ready to help you with everything. You just need to care about your content.

3.2.2. Optimize images

Always optimize/compress your jpeg images before uploading them to the server. Large images should be compressed at around 90% image quality and you should also try to limit the use of lossless image files (uncompressed pngs).


3.2.3. Use a caching plugin

We can’t recommend enough the necessity to good caching. If you use a managed hosting such as WPEngine you don’t need this. But if you are using SiteGround or MT or any other hosting you need to cache your content. For this purpose, we recommend W3 Total Cache! It’s a great and easy to use plugin, and with only a bit of work you can double your site’s speed.


Cache tips:

  • Enable page caching
  • Enable database caching (it might be a bit unstable but you need to check it out at least)
  • Don't enable object caching (the theme doesn't use that, so it's useless)
  • Don't minify anything! CSS / HTML minification usually breaks themes, and the JS files are already compiled into a single minified one.

3.3 SEO Advices

The theme is built in a way to be SEO friendly, by emphasizing titles with heading tags, having the content before anything else, stripping out useless content, fast loading, setting titles in the header for better crawling, etc.. All these help.. But you have to remember that Content is King! So you shouldn’t blame the theme because your website doesn’t appear in search engines. You should always focus on providing good content and in this way, your website will definitely look great in search engines.

Also, you should always install a popular SEO plugin which will make the most of keywords and descriptions.

3.4 Translating the theme

This theme is localized, which means it can easily be translated in your own language. There are various methods to do a simple translate or create a website in multiple languages, so just use the one which works best for you.

3.4.1. Simple translate

The theme offers a .pot file which contains all the used strings (backend & frontend included). You can use this file in order to create your own translation or even change English words.

However, the most easy way is to use a third party plugin. We recommend Loco Translate. It's an amazing piece of software, which allows you to do translations with ease.



3.4.2. Multilanguage

If you're looking for having your website in two or more languages, there is a powerful plugin which you can use. Because of the module builder, you need a plugin which handles meta fields. This plugin is WPML!
